Hello SouthCoasters – we have a special weekend coming up! Our home base will be Americas Best Value Inn – Porterville. I’ve linked to the Hotels.com website which currently has rates from $68 – $77 per night which is a pretty good deal, and is fully refundable before September 25th. I advise reserving your room now to get the best rate for the room you want.
Day 1 – Fri: We will meet at Panera Bread, 990 Town Center Dr, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. Be there gassed up by 8:10am for the pre-ride meeting (or earlier if you want coffee or food), and KSU will be 8:30am. We’ll head up through Angeles Forest and stopping at the Keene Cafe for early lunch. Then we’ll be heading up the 178 along the Kern River up to Lake Isabella. From there we’ll head east and take Evans Rd to Old State Dr up into Porterville, where we should arrive at the hotel just before 3pm. Total mileage will be around 225 miles from Panera to the hotel. There are Japanese, Mexican and Italian restaurants within a 1/5 mile of the hotel, so we can decide as a group where to eat Fri and Sat nights. Average temps for this day will be around 86*.
Day 2 – Sat: This day will have us looping around the Sequoia National Forest. We’ll depart the hotel, gassed up at 8:30am. We then head north and take Yokohl Dr east and down into Springville, then east on the 190 to our brunch stop at the Pierpoint Bar and Grill. From there we’ll continue down the 190 to the Great Western Divide Hwy then to the Trail of 100 Giants for a nice break. Then we head down to Parker Pass then into California Hot Springs and east on Hot Springs Rd. Then we go north to Old Stage Rd (J22) and back up into Porterville to finish the loop. Right before getting to the hotel, we can stop at the Mini-Mart for gas, snacks and maybe some adult beverages for the evening. This will be about a 132 mile loop that should get us back to the hotel right around 3:30pm. Average temps for this day will be around 84*.
Day 3 – Sun: There is no planned ride back home. Folks are free to explore the area more or head home by themselves or in a group.
More details and GPX files will follow as the date gets closer, and don’t forget to signup for this event HERE. And don’t forget to reserve your room ASAP for the best rate. Looking forward to a great weekend with awesome roads and great scenery which will make this a weekend to remember!
