Howdy SouthCoasters! It’s been a while since we’ve traversed Route 66, so it’s time to do it again. This will be an extended weekend beginning on Sat, and coming back Tue. Why start on Sat? Well for those who can’t take time off work during weekdays, this gives you an option to leave Sat and come home on Sun if you like, or even Mon.
This will be a hotel/motel event, and we’ll be staying at a different hotel each night. I’ve come up with some mostly inexpensive (fully refundable) hotels for the weekend, and you can reserve your rooms through Hotels.com. If you sign-up to be a member of Hotels.com (which is free), you get 7-10$ off. If you’re planning on attending this awesome weekend, I suggest you reserve your rooms ASAP as it seems the price will go up the closer the date gets to the event. And don’t forget to sign-up on the Calendar Event Page. Here are the hotels.
Sat, Mar 15th: Motel 6 Kingman
Sun, Mar 16th: Relax Inn Motel
Mon, Mar 17th: Sierra InnI’ve attached the GPX files for days 1-4 of this event.

Could you briefly describe the planned route and approximate miles per day?

Hello everyone – Here’s some basic info about this Route 66 extended weekend trip that’s coming up in March.
Day 1: We’ll be meeting up at Flo’s Airport Cafe in Chino at 8am, and departing at 8:30am. The destination will be the Motel 6 in Kingman, AZ, and we should be arriving there around 4:15pm MST. This route will be about 283 miles, and one of the stops will be in the historic Oatman Ghost Town, where we can kick some burros or feed them – your call.
Day 2: We’ll depart Kingman at 8:30am with the destination being the Relax Inn in Flagstaff, AZ and should arrive there close to 4pm. This route will be about 161 miles, with stops at the Hackberry General Store and at the Grand Canyon Caverns. We have the option of taking one of the few tours that’s offered there if so inclined.
Day 3: We’ll depart Flagstaff at 9am with the destination being the Sierra Inn in Prescott, AZ and should arrive there around 2:30pm. This route will be about 94 miles, and take us down through Sedona and into Jerome. We’ll stop in Jerome for lunch and take in some sight-seeing before heading to our Prescott destination.
Day 4: Basically this will be a slab home riding around 340 miles, depending on where you live and we should be getting home before 4pm PDT if we depart around 8:30am.
We’ll have time in the evenings over dinner to tell lies about the folks who didn’t attend the trip, and basically have some adult beverages of your choice and fun camaraderie with the group.
More details to follow along with GPX files and overall route maps. Hope to see you there!

So cool Ron. This will be a great trip!
- January 19, 2025 at 8:40 pm #24282
Thanks Ron. Are we going to be on freeways a lot? Like to Kingman, is that up 15 then I-40? And what’s the route back from Prescott? I’m not a big fan of freeways so I’m just trying to get a feel. Thanks Ron!

This looks to be the route for day 1.Pretty much any trip to Arizona or Nevada is going to involve freeways and interstate riding the first day, just to get out of California. There’s a lot of desert out there you need to get behind you, before you get to the good stuff.Attachments:

I’m looking for someone who wants to share a room.
- January 21, 2025 at 3:27 pm #24294
I’ll have GPX files and route overview map pictures up this weekend. The routes will be avoiding freeways as much as possible. I assume on Tuesday, the final day, most will want to get home ASAP, so that’ll be mostly slab.
- January 24, 2025 at 5:26 pm #24307
As promised, the GPX files have been added to the first post here.
I’m adding overview pics of the routes with forecasted temps for each day.
Everyone has the option to take their own route back home, but the Day 4 route I have ends at the Chevron in Riverside just off the 91. Folks can head their own way home from there. There’s a final route overview combining days 1-4. Here the route line in black is the Day 1 route, Day 2 is in yellow, Day 3 is in green, and Day 4’s return route is in red.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Hello Route 66 Travelers! This trip is coming up fast, less than a week away. I’ve made a few tweaks to the GPX files, nothing major, just some fine tuning. So download those again if you haven’t already and want the updates.
And as a reminder, we’re meeting at Flo’s Airport Cafe located at:
7000 Merrill Ave
Chino, CA 91710Be there by 8am for the ride briefing, or earlier if you want breakfast. We’ll be KSU at 8:30am. Please let me know if you have any questions, and look forward to fun trip!

Ron, unfortunately I am unable to attend this ride and must withdraw from the event. Sorry for this notification at this late date.
Ric.

I won’t be making this ride. Sorry guys.
- March 13, 2025 at 8:46 pm #24626
Okay, just about everyone who signed up for this ride has cancelled. Therefore, the Route 66 trip is officially cancelled. I’m going to try and reschedule this in the next month or two.
I’ll be posting more info as a confirmed date for this closer. For those who wanted to go but couldn’t – don’t despair, it’s going to happen! 🙂
- March 14, 2025 at 2:00 pm #24627
So there were at least a few folks who were interested in attending, but couldn’t due to one reason or another. This is an effort to see what the response is like to rescheduling this trip to the end of April, before the temps get too toasty.
So for those folks still interested in this 4 day ride (though you wouldn’t have to do the full 4 days if so inclined), would you prefer:
– Thursday – Sunday (4/24 – 4/27)
or
– Saturday – Tuesday (4/26 – 4/29)These dates don’t conflict with any of the other club events, so you wouldn’t have to miss out on something else you might be interested in attending to attend this. This event would also keep the same hotels that were previously scheduled.
Please respond here with your preferences on the trip’s rescheduled dates. Thanks! 🙂
- March 15, 2025 at 6:01 am #24628
Thanks Ron,
Sorry you had to cancel. 24-27 works for me.
- March 15, 2025 at 12:16 pm #24629
My availability has changed (several sequential house projects underway) so I cannot make either of the proposed dates.

Kind of a good thing the trip was cancelled. I-40 had a big incident on March 13th. near Williams, AZ, due to snowy and icy conditions. a link
- March 15, 2025 at 7:09 pm #24632
Good thing we would’ve bypassed that part on Route 66. 😉
- March 17, 2025 at 7:18 am #24637
Google photos has an ‘ask’ feature bottom right, I typed in Williams, Az (route 66) and here’s the results I got. The coldest motocamping experience ever. Looking forward to hotel camping and the next posting of your ride Ron.
“You’ve visited Williams, Arizona, a few times, most recently in December 2023, when you explored the Grand Canyon Caverns and the surrounding landscape with Roberto and Todd.
Earlier trips to Williams included a stop at a gift shop in November 2020, and a scenic motorcycle ride through Kaibab National Forest in September 2020.”Attachments:

How does the dates of Thu, May 8th – Sun, May 11th 2025 look for everyone for rescheduling the Route 66 trip?
- March 22, 2025 at 10:08 am #24651
Haven’t gotten any responses here, so it looks like this trip is cancelled unless folks speak up and still want to go on this trip.
So if no interest this time around, we’ll try and do this next year.
- March 22, 2025 at 7:18 pm #24653
Ron,
Sorry I had to back out of this one, I am usually always up for a few “kicks”.
Next year will be special as Route 66 celebrates it’s 100 anniversary! That may be a must do ride!

No worries Ric! Seems fitting to do Route 66 on its 100 year anniversary. 🙂
