Time to get out and smell the wildflowers.

      April 11th, Friday – 13th, Sunday. 2025

Check out the event page and register for this once a year opportunity to see nature up close.

This is a ROAD & ADV  ride for Club members. The ADV ride is headed by Ryan and is part of the training  for the upcoming BDR ride. The ADV group will be camping, fine tuning their survival skills while getting valuable dirt riding time under their belts. If you are attending this ride as part of the ADV/camping group please nominate that on this forum and also contact Ryan directly.

I will be leading the road group and thus will not be providing the support trailer services for the ADV group on this trip. Good luck dirt guys! I hope we can meet up for a meal and group photo.

      Now, down to the pavement.!

We will meet at Panera Bread, La Canada, Friday morning 11:00am with the ADV group. Together we will make our way to the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve. When the ADV riders head to find a campsite in the dust and pollen laden hillsides that rim the National Monument,  we will make our way to the booming oil town of Taft. Luxury awaits our arrival at the Best Western Plus Taft Inn, where I have reserved rooms for the group to relax and recuperate  from the days arduous travels. I have booked rooms for Friday and Saturday nights with two Queen beds so you can split costs with a fellow member. Of course you can take the entire room if you prefer the solitude. (The 2 QB room for two nights, including tax is $316.70).

Limited space so don’t leave it until the last minute to decide you can’t miss this one.! Contact me directly to secure your room. I will be canceling my reservations if rooms are not secured one week prior to the reservation dates.

Dinner Friday night is a short stroll to Mi Casita Mexican Restaurant that offers a feast of Mexican authentic dishes and a full bar to quench your thirst. Enjoy this evening with your road companions and then retire to your room to revitalize your body and senses with a good night sleep, remembering those ADV riders slapping mosquitos as they roll back and forward in a REI sleeping bag atop an inflated bed roll that, come morning, will be as flat as a snakes butt in a wagon wheel rut.

We will laugh about that, as we enjoy the provided breakfast at the Best Western, before heading out for our Saturday adventure.  This is a leisurely ride. We will enjoy a 227 mile loop (about 4 1/2 hour ride time.) that will take us along the 58 to Santa Margarita, Orcutt Rd to Arroyo Grande and a short 101 ride to Nipomo. We will feast on BBQ at Rancho Nipomo BBQ for our lunch break and with full bellies we will do our best to navigate 166 through New Cuyama (where we may stop for pie and ice cream) back to Taft and the the Hotel swimming pool.

Saturday evening we stroll to the Pizza Factory for a another relaxing meal and swap tales, laughter and memories of the day we all just enjoyed.

Sunday morning we make trails home, leaving the Carrizo Plains behind but taking our memories with us.!

Again, sign up on the Event page, jump on this forum and nominate ROAD or ADV . Contact Ryan for ADV info and If you would like to Hotel, please contact Ric Magrath directly.

Hi Ric – We’re in for your Road ride. Though we’ll be staying at the Western Inn & Suites, which is about a 1/2 mile  and 2 minute ride away from your Best Western Plus Inn, and about 1/2 the price.

Attached is the gpx file for the Saturday ride around Carrizo Plains for the pavement group. A great circle route full of great riding. Of course the “dirt” team is invited to join in. The weather will be wonderful and the scenery spectacular. If the flowers are not popping we will still have incredible vistas to absorb as we cruise the Plains and break away from the oil fields.  I love the smell of fresh pumping oil first thing in the morning!

Grab breakfast and a coffee, let the morning unfold at a casual pace, There will be a ride briefing at 8:45 am at the Best Western parking lot, before we KSU at 9:00 am. This will be an easy pace ride, leveraging the freshness of spring and all the wonderful sights and smells that this season brings us.

If you have noticed odd way points in the gpx file, I will give you a hint. Some of them are landmarks in the 2025 Ride Challenge. Check out the information in the “rides” forum, sign up before the ride and you can score some early big points.

Check the original post for the gpx file for Friday.

Hello High Plains Drifters, er Carrizo Plains Riders – Ric had asked me to post the routes that I’ve created with inRoute.  These GPX files may work better for the bikes with the large TFTs, or other nav apps.  The files are basically the same routes that Ric posted, just updated a bit.  Feel free to use them if you like. 🙂

What an absolutely beautiful and awesome trip!  Thank you Ric Magrath, for putting on the road portion of this trip. Beautiful weather, hills and mountains still green, the coast from Atascadero to Nipomo a little cool, the lunch meal at the BBQ place and the tri-tip sandwich I had was incredibly good, and the stop at the Buckhorn in New Cuyama for Apple pie with ice cream and a cup of coffee was perfect to break up the ride.  Really glad I decided to go on this one. Special thanks to Steve Leo for showing up Saturday morning early to join us for most of the ride and to lead for a bit first thing in the morning. One 1200 R naked bike, the rest 1200 or 1250 GS or GSA’s, one R18 Transcontinetal, and one 1250 RT made up the road group ride. Good Times, had by all!

Throwing this out there, maybe this should be an annual or every other year ride for new members… It’s that good, in spring season.  Highway 58 is just amazingly fun!

A second thank you to Eric for leading an awesome weekend ride!  And nice to have Steve Leo join us on Sat.
