I have quotes to get it done by the dealer but they seem expensive but I know BMW means (Bring Money With) just looking at thoughts on the subject. I have a

Sounds like a Tech Day is in order!

But I have a 2008 R1200RT and it’s easy enough. If this video doesn’t scare you I have a better write-up at home I’ll upload later.

Plugs, valves, oil and a few other small things is all the major maintenance needed. Here’s what I do. (The additions in red in the PDF are my notes.)

              Every 12,000 miles:
Engine Oil & Filter, 4.2 qt
Check Brake Fluid – DOT 4
Check Clutch Fluid – Vitamol V10
              Replace Air Filter Mahl 98412
              Adjust Valve Clearance
              Throttle Sync

              Every 24,000 miles/2 years
Replace 4 Spark Plugs NGK DCPR8 EKC 16mm socket, 23 nm
Replace Gearbox Oil, 900ml, 30 nm

              Every 36,000 miles/3 years
              Replace Alternator Belt
              Every 48,000 miles/4 years
              Replace Brake Fluid DOT 4
              Replace Fuel Filter (external)
Replace Final Drive oil (GL5 Syn)

Thanks for this info I still needed to take my bike into the dealer because the clutch was smelling I found out that I need to replace the clutch which is super expensive. I now need to decide if I want to replace or trade in.

I like having the Jim Von Baden DVD handy for reference—-well worth the $30.

Thanks Rick! Are there any possible warrantee issues if you do it yourself? Do you just keep good records?

Mark – I don’t know about warranty issues if you do it yourself, except if you let John help you. Then anything from BMW is null and void. But other than that I’ve never heard of any. And of course, I always keep good records.

If I help someone, I’ll do it anonymously, wear a mask, give a false name, etc. So shouldn’t have any problem there.
