Greetings Folks,
This thread will serve as the official rider thread for those of you who are joining me for Death Valley this year. As discussed during the event planning for the year, the intent of this ride was to support/partner with the Airhead 27th annual Death Valley Rendezvous, so I will continue with this as the intent and plan.
The event this year actually starts on Thursday which used to be an early arrival day, but the popularity of the early birds made it an official day. I will be leaving on Friday returning Sunday with a day ride for Saturday. Since there is so much to do in the area, I am sure our GS riders will have their own dirt considerations 🙂
For those who wish to RV or hotel, there are options in the area and you can make a direct reservation with Furnace Creek should you wish to RV. You can hotel, but the options will be up to you for reservation.
John Covington from the Airhead club should be at the general meeting this Saturday. Payment details are in the official posting here and I expect he will also take registrations at the meeting.
http://bmwra.org/local-rally/27th-annual-airheads-beemer-club-death-valley-rendezvous
I will post to and from routes soon and some considerations for Saturday.
Thanks,
Brandon -

For those who will be hoteling it for this event, where are most planning on staying?

Ron,
How are you seeing this thread? When I posted it last night, I could not get it to show up in the Forum or on recent topics. It is still invisible to me but yet somehow you snagged it? I have a note out to Rick to see how I broke it 🙂

Brandon,
There is an update appears in the Calendar event info. Not sure if you mean another Forum/Rides Thread.

What are the dates?
Ron, generally people who intend to do hotelling do so on the Nevada side and it is real cheap. It’s the only one with RV parking and it is a casino. Can’t think of the name, but it’s about 30-40 min ride from furnace creek eastbound.

Anyone interested in an off-road day either Friday or Saturday, we will be riding trails to see the more remote side of Death Valley. We will be particpating in all the Airhead/South Coaster activities, meals, fire, etc, but doing off road ride routes. We will meet up at the Airhead/South Coaster base camp in Furnace creek same time as the main group.
We will be staying at the Sunset or Texas campgrouonds across the street from the Airhead/South Coaster base at Furnace Creek. There are no hook ups for RV’s. See link below for details:
https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/camping.htm
If you are interested, let us know and we can talk about routes.

Thanks Brandon, making a note. If I were to join, I’ll be staying at the Longstreet Inn Casino, NV Fri & Sat., so I’ll be tagging along with you. I’ll post on my reservations and confirmation.

Jan and I are going to take our motorhome to Death Valley on Thursday night and stay at the Longstreet Inn and RV Park. The hotel is only $85.00 per night and the RV spots are $32.00.
https://www.longstreetcasino.com/ for hotel
775-372-1777 – for RV spotsFurnace Creek Hotel is $419.00 per night
Last I looked, the RV Spots were around $75 but with the Gov shutdown no one knowsWe stayed at the Longstreet RV Park a few years ago and it worked out great.
We are going to do a day ride on Friday and then the group ride on Saturday. If anyone needs any more information about the hotel and RV park let me know. I know we have at least one other person joining us – Bikram! Would love to have some company Thursday night and for our ride on Friday.

I really liked the Long Street hotel when we stayed there three years ago Steve, it is just that we are not able to really participate in the Airhead event, so I thought we would stay across the street from Furnace Creek in either Sunset or Texas campgrounds. We can hang out with the airheads at their camp, meals, fire, and 40 miles less driving each way several times that weekend. At least for the RV option is seems like little value to drive the MH nearly 100 miles further and one or two days of riding the bike back a forth the 40 miles.
Come on out with us Thursday afternoon, spend Valentines evening in the desert with a glass of wine and bring the dual sports! 🙂

How do you register for the rally? The web site, http://bmwra.org/local-rally/27th-annual-airheads-beemer-club-death-valley-rendezvous , offers no directions or link for registration.

Registration for the Airhead event is pretty Old School, like the bikes…..
.
It is either by direct mail to John Covington or Paypal. Note the price increase after 1/31/19!
.
.
Here is the info from the Airhead site:
.
Due to the popularity of Thursday arrivals, we have decided to make it offical. The DVR27 will be four nights of camping.
Opening night, we will have a bratwurst and beer cookout, for donations. Friday night thru Sunday morning, awesome meals by Pixton/Kempton MotoCatering. I do know that Saturday night is Tri Tip. Vegitarian options are available. No lunches are provided.
We will also have the amenities, you’ve come to know and love: nightly bonfires, fresh fruit, snacks, water and some amazing beverages. Maybe some homebrew too.
Registration before 1/31/19 is $80. After 1/31/19 registration is $100, if there are any openings available. We are in the walkin tent area only. Parking is limited. No motorhome camping. If you need to cancel do so before 1/31/19 for a full refund.
Refer back here for the latest up to date information.
The Park charges $25 for motorcycles to enter for a week. Other rates for other vehicles. I believe Senior Pass gets you in for free.
Please make check out to:

Some Bad News from the Leo’s. We are going to have to cancel our plans to attend the Death Valley Ride. We just found out that Jan has a fracture in one of her lower back vertebra and it doesn’t look like she is going to be able to ride for quite some time. Doctor says 10 months for full recovery if she behaves herself and riding in not considered behaving herself.

January 20, 2019 at 4:49 pm #9613
Sorry to hear Steve, best of luck Jan for a quick recovery and return to so the saddle 🙏🏼
You both will be missed.

Bummer Steve and Jan, hope Jan is good patient and the healing goes well!

Just paid my camping fee to Covington @ ABClub via PayPal. Just a reminder that before the end of Jan the fee is $80 vs $100.

SCBMWRC Ride Outline – Death Valley
February 15, 16, 17 – 2019
Day 1
• 283.76 Miles – Estimated 4h 58 min ride time w/lunch in Ridgecrest
• MEET UP 8:30 AM Starbucks 12700 Limonite Ave, Corona 92880
• Rider meeting: 8:45 AM
• KSU time w/full gas: 9 AM
Ride Route Summary: We will meet at a Starbucks in Corona (Eastvale) off Limonite for pre-ride meeting and festivities. Please arrive with full gas. A bit of highway time via the 15N to the 395 until we land in Ridgecrest for lunch at Kristy’s Family Restaurant around noon. From there, we will continue up the 395 joining the 190 in Olancha for a scenic ride into the valley. Slightly different from last year so folks can enjoy some alternate views into the park. We will make a quick stop in Stovepipe wells for those who need gas etc as I recall it is a bit cheaper than fuel in Furnace Creek to gas up early for the next day.
Day 2
• 215.61 Miles – Estimated 5h 29 min
• MEET UP 9:00AM – Furnace Creek Park Entrance (so those who are not camping don’t have to pay
entrance fee (just in case) w/full gas
• Rider meeting: 9:15 AM
• KSU time: 9:30 AM
Ride Route Summary: We will head down to Dantes View, it will be cold so dress warm as it was cold last year so we can soak in the views (I missed this bit of the ride last year). A bit of backtracking to Beatty, NV for lunch at KC’s Outpost Saloon and Eatery, and a good time to top off for gas. Always good to get gas often in DV and there it should be a bit cheaper. Just a few miles down the road will be a stop at Rhyolite, a ghost town for sightseeing and photos. Following we will move on Ubehebe Crater assuming the road is open, then back to Furnace Creek.
Day 3
• 351.18 Miles – Estimated 8h 8 min
• MEET UP 8:30 AM – Furnace Creek Park Entrance (so those who are not camping don’t have to pay
entrance fee (just in case) w/full gas
• Rider meeting: 8:45 AM
• KSU time: 9:00 AM
Ride Route Summary: We will head out of the park via the 190 and grab the 127 in DV Junction and either Lunch and gas in Baker, or just gas if folks are not hungry and press on via National Trails Highway. We will eventually land in 29 Palms for gas, and if we did not eat in Baker, perhaps enjoy lunch at the BBQ joint which was an awesome stop during the Laughlin ride for a later lunch. I plan on heading towards, the 10, 60, then 71 for a ride termination at the Starbucks off Chino Hills Parkway if folks are still somewhat together by then. Of course, folks can take their own way home, but that pin will be the official end of the ride. Looking forward to seeing you all out there! -

Hi Folks,
If you have registered with the AirHeads for camping, you most likely received this from John. I am also copying this here for reference in case it was missed to keep folks updated.
From John Covington:
Thanks to all that preregistered.
As of right now the Federal Government is back running and Death Valley National Park will be open starting 1/31/19.
Death Valley Rendezvous 27 starts 2/14/19. Federal funding goes until 2/15/19. On 2/2/19 I may drive out to the Park and try to talk with the rangers and camp host, possibly check out some alternate locations. If we are denied access to our reserved sites then money will be refunded.
I will try to keep everyone up to date on the latest.
Go to airheads.org for the current updates.
If you received this email more than once you may have registered for another person. If so forward this to them or send me their contact info.
At this moment we have 77 preregistered guests, even with last years numbers.
Don’t forget your bathing suit, a bunch of head to the pool Sunday afternoon.John Covington

Brandon do you have our club banner? We should fly it at our campsite 😉 Looking forward to the ride. I should have my R75/5 back together today and be able to get a few rides in before the trip to ensure it is ready … otherwise the trusty (and MUCH warmer) RT may get slotted for duty.
-
February 2, 2019 at 8:45 am #9725
Chris,
Good point on the Banner I do have it, I will check with John Covington to make sure there are no ‘conflicts’ considering 🙂 How did the reassembly go?

LATEST UPDATE FROM JOHN COVINGTON
This message is sent to all registered guests of DVR27 and a few others.
We are getting some really nice door prizes sent in to DVR27. Irv Seaver BMW Motorcycles and Euromotoelectrics.com contributed, and some really nice other items promised. Many of which are Airhead specific, altogether some nice stuff. I will work to see that the Airhead specific items go to Airhead specific owners. General motorcycle stuff will be available to all.
Our Plan A, for Furnace Creek is progressing at a comfortable rate. Plan B is in Plan A.
We have many volunteers and are comprising a packing list list for anyone volunteering to transport rally necessities. Please recontact me to put you on our spreadsheet. If you are bringing firewood, an easy up, ice, anything. I hope to send out the spreadsheet to all preregistered guests. So they can get an idea of what Gary Jackson is bringing. Understand the my firewood commitment. See what Peter Smith and Arrowhead Screen Printers do for us. Also the contributions of Aric and Jeff. Understand that this is a club effort, every bit helps tremendously.
John

Chris/Brandon;
I just spoke with John C and he says flying the SouthCoaster banner would be no problem, IF you arrive on your Airhead. The last part was mine, not John’s.
🙂 -
February 2, 2019 at 11:45 pm #9736
Thanks Bill. The Airhead requirement is on Chris. I still need to make that investment 🙂
-
February 3, 2019 at 7:46 am #9738
…on Chris AND Eastly. Hoping to see Karl W’s /6 on his toy hauler.
🙂 -
February 4, 2019 at 7:49 am #9742
We will have the Motorhome and trailer, not able to camp with the airheads due to space unfortunately. We will be just across the street at Sunset Campground aka “parking lot”.
.
I offered to John Covington to haul out whatever he can get to me before the weekend or what I can run to OC and bring back in my Jeep.
.
If anyone else needs something hauled out, get it to my house in Torrance, or I may be able to meet you in OC if John C has a load to pick up.
.
Not bringing my R75 to DV, but will be coming to the Airhead bfast this Sunday 2/10/19.
.
Riding off-road, Friday and Saturday for those that might be interested. Trail ideas appreciated, Titus if we have first timers, that is always a must, but others? -
February 5, 2019 at 11:09 pm #9754
I’m looking forward to the DV trip, my first overnighter since the John Day rally last summer. Jeez!
I’m camping with the Airheads, but sadly my R75/6 will not be road ready. (Sorry Bill!) I can’t get away until noon Friday. Save me a campsite, Chris! -
February 6, 2019 at 9:15 am #9755
David Eastly – I’m CERTAIN the folks at the DVR can find the problem you are having with the electrical system.
-
February 9, 2019 at 10:27 pm #9770
Alright, if you were waiting for me to sign up, your wait is over. I’m going. 😉
Eastly says if I don’t love it, he’ll pay for it. He’s a good friend but I’m already thinking I don’t like it. -
February 10, 2019 at 7:55 am #9771
Mark B, just confirming, you signed up with the Airheads, John Covington per the post above?
Just want to make sure you know how much to get reimbursed from Eastly!!
Look forward to seeign you next week!
-
February 10, 2019 at 2:32 pm #9773
well since it is after the pre-registration deadline, I will make it easy, a cool 100 😀
However, how to define ‘fun’? I think this bet has too much subjectivity.
-
February 10, 2019 at 2:49 pm #9776
Prez- you don’t know what fun is? What has home ownership done to you?
=8^O -
February 10, 2019 at 5:57 pm #9777
I want the same deal Eastly … and I’m with Mark, not lovin it in advance.
-
February 10, 2019 at 7:44 pm #9778
Karl – I would up for some dirt on Saturday.
-
February 11, 2019 at 7:13 am #9779
Jacob, and anyone interested in doing an offroad route Saturday, let’s follow the same timeline as the main group, meet up at Airhead central, Furnace Creek:
.
Day 2
• Bfast at Airead campsite 8:00am-9:00am
• MEET UP 9:00AM – Furnace Creek Park Entrance (so those who are not camping don’t have to pay
entrance fee (just in case) w/full gas.
• Rider meeting: 9:15 AM
• KSU time: 9:30 AMBring your maps, route to be discussed. Going to keep it fun and to see if we can find some new sites, but if we have enough first timers, Titus Canyon may be the best bang for the buck.

I have room in the trailer for mine, perhaps I should pack my R75?????

February 12, 2019 at 4:28 pm #9792
I thought only Harleys needed to be trailered?
-
February 12, 2019 at 6:25 pm #9793
Hahaha Mark. That and an oil pan to catch the oil leakage. Getting closer and looking forward to it!
-
February 13, 2019 at 6:56 am #9795
That little Honda 230L would break up before it made it all the way out to DV…. 🙂
-
February 13, 2019 at 7:14 am #9796
While they were never my favorite dirt bikes I owned (and I’ve had more than my share), I have to say I’ve never owned a Honda dirt bike that wasn’t damn near bulletproof. I wouldn’t bet against it … especially with Sharon at the controls!
-
February 13, 2019 at 9:34 am #9797
Chris – Sooooo….what WAS your favorite?
-
February 13, 2019 at 3:19 pm #9800
I would think those trailering it to the event wouldn’t accumulate club milage. Not that it really matters because Wagner typically come in first place by miles anyway… Just looking out for the non-wagners 😉
-
February 13, 2019 at 3:35 pm #9801
I totally agree, Mark! Maybe we need a separate category for trailer miles! LOL
-
February 13, 2019 at 5:46 pm #9802
Where is the love?
-
February 13, 2019 at 6:02 pm #9803
Bill, My KTM 300 2 stroke was the best bike I owned … Gas Gas 250 2 stroke was the 2nd place finisher .. owned a good number of 4 strokes, but nothing made me smile quite as big as that 2 stroke snap.
On another note, check out this cool weather website with weather, wind, etc. all over the world https://www.ventusky.com/?p=35.04;-117.77;7&l=rain-3h&t=20190216/0300 … has me seriously considering the risks of riding my close to 50 year naked 75/5 in potential rain, wind, etc both ways on our DV trip with the RT quietly siting next to it mocking me.
-
February 13, 2019 at 9:25 pm #9804
Chris – Pack your ol’ yeller 75/5 up in Wagner’s trailer and ride your RT out with us. Just remember, No miles for you!
Attachments:
-
February 14, 2019 at 8:01 am #9806
Oh I’m riding and collecting miles regardless !!! I already have my 60/5 that is for sale in the Wagner’s trailer to get some Airhead eyes on it at the rally. I am thinking the RT is probably the safer/wiser choice for bad weather. It bums me out though … the 75/5 has been locked and loaded for days

The one thing we know for tomorrow when they sky’s clear is it will be a beautiful ride up. Nothing like so cal after a good drenching to clear away the smog. For those riding with me in the group, see you in the morning!

February 14, 2019 at 11:06 am #9811
It’s BEAUTIFUL here in Ridgecrest mid-day Thursday, nothing but sunshine and blue skies……. Just like last year, right Brandon and Rick… :0
.
Come on out and buy this R65 I am hauling around, along with tables, chairs and water bottles for all you campers……. don’t need no stinking miles!!! 🙂 -
February 14, 2019 at 11:10 am #9812
Ahem, it’s an R60 Karl. I’ll give you a pass this time. I know you are new to the Airhead world. Glad the weather is good for you.
-
February 14, 2019 at 11:38 am #9813
It’s a downpour in South OC! I’m glad I’m not riding out today.
Looks like fantastic weather for the weekend though 🙂 -

I’m home safe & sound.
Thanks to Brandon (and Bill) for a fun camp out and ride. -
February 17, 2019 at 6:22 pm #9815
Some would say, “Brandon managed to lead us through high winds, rain, a sandstorm, and frigid temperatures”.
Then, there are some (like me) who say “Brandon did not lead us into any snow!” Thanks, Brandon, for a great weekend!
(I made it home fine by about 5:30). -
February 18, 2019 at 7:34 am #9816
Sharon and I made it home in the big cage, RV, around the same time a you bikes, dropping off Roady’s R60 safe and sound in Brea on the way. Good weekend Brandon, thanks. Those Airheads are one fun and interesting group!

Really fun weekend/adventure!! Glad you linked us South Coasters up with the Airheads Brandon, good group of down to earth folks.
Reminder to those of you that took photos to submit them here: [email protected] so Mark B can add them to our gallery.
