If the ride can leave Irv Seaver BMW between 11:00 and 11:30 we should be at the South County meet-up point between 11:45 and 12:15.

Once again, that meet-up point is at the Shell gas station at the bottom of the I-5 southbound off/on-ramp to Camino De Estrella in San Clemente. That’s the very next off-ramp past the Pacific Coast Hwy exit.

The brisket sandwich and berry cobbler I had on 4th of July weekend at the Firehouse Que & Brew. Yum!

Let the 2022-2023 SCBMWRC ride season begin! The The first official ride of the season will depart from Irv Seaver BMW on Saturday July 16 after the the Ride Planning Meeting.

The route will take us west on Katella to 57 south to I-5 south. We’ll continue on I-5 south to San Clemente where we’ll exit at Camino De Estrella and stop at the Shell Express gas station at the bottom of the offramp. This is a MEET-UP POINT for South Orange County members who would like to join the ride.

From there we will continue south on I-5 to 76 East in Oceanside and ride some interesting rural roads through Morro Hills to Fallbrook.

Our lunch stop will be at Firehouse Que and Brew which is at 1019 S Main Ave in Fallbrook. It’s an excellent Texas-style smoked barbecue restaurant and they also serve some of the best peach cobbler I’ve ever eaten. Yum! They have indoor and covered outdoor dining areas. There are 76, Arco and Shell gas stations within a block of the restaurant.

After lunch we’ll head north to Wildomar and Lake Elsinore via De Luz Road. Wildomar is a good BREAK-AWAY POINT for riders who want to head home via I-15. The rest of us will ride over Ortegs Hwy to Rancho Mission Viejo which is a good BREAK-AWAY POINT for riders going home to South Orange County.

Anyone left can continue to the intersection of Chapman Ave and the 55 Fwy via Antonio Pkwy, Trabuco, Live Oak, and Santiago Canyon Roads. That will be the official end of the group ride.

Total mileage is about 170 miles and will probably take 4-5 hours including the lunch stop.

Well, I’m home. 2,798 miles since I left for the 7-passes ride on June 9th. My stops were Kernville & Sonora CA, Reno and Winnemucca NV, John Day OR, and Alturas and Penryn CA.

Looking at these passes I see that a “photo ID will be required” and “tickets cannot be sold, auctioned or transferred.” I don’t know whether that will actually be enforced, but it might be a mistake to assume that anyone will be able to get through the park with someone else’s pass.

I’ve been riding motorcycles for 56+ years, but this will be the first time I camp at a rally; either alone or with other club members. So my question is, do the club members try to camp together as a group or is it basically everyone for themselves?
                      .
Sergio & I will be riding straight up on Thursday and I anticipate arriving at the fairgrounds around 2-3. Any idea when the 2-day group expects to arrive? Is any additional planning necessary?
                      .
As I’ve mentioned before, I lived right next to the fairgrounds for 12+ years and I’ve been back to Quincy to visit as little as 6 years ago, but it’s been 20 years since I was on fairgrounds property so I can’t be much help suggesting prime places to pitch tents anymore.

You’re right, Karl. I guess I was getting the 49er and Chief Joseph rallies mixed up.
                        .
I guess I’ll have to reassess whether I really want to ride home on Sunday or do it on Monday. I dread the holiday traffic, but I’m not sure I want to miss the last whole day of the rally.

                        Hey Pete,
The 49er Rally website shows 11am Monday 5/30 as the closing of the rally. That means the closing ceremonies and likely the GS Giants challenge and several other challenges which are good to watch, (or participate in if you like) are on Sunday.
                        .
Just wanted to clarify, it is a long way up there area great riding in the area, we are going to take full advantage, but understand if you want to miss the Monday traffic.
                        .
Enjoy the ride, see you there,

                        Karl

Sunday at the 49er Rally is a pack-up and go day. In fact, the rally officially ends at 11:00 am according to their website.

Like John, Sergio and I don’t want anything to do with Memorial Day Monday traffic when everyone is coming home from the long weekend, so we will be packing up and heading out fairly early on Sunday and going straight home. It’s interesting to note that the ride home via I-5 is 560 miles, via SR-99 it’s 564 miles, and via 395 it’s 566 miles (to central OC) so mileage-wise it’s a wash. The initial plan is to come back via SR-99, but that hasn’t been written in ink yet.

FWIW, Sergio and I will be riding up to the rally in ‘get-there’ mode (I-5) on Thursday. Anyone with similar plans is welcome to join us.

The helmet about 1 hour before I left on the trip. It had a Packtalk Bold in it at the time, but I moved it to the replacement helmet.

On Thursday night I’ll be staying in a bungalow at the Kern Lodge ($95.40) and on Friday night I’m booked at the Gunn House ($144.48).

On Sunday I’m heading north from Tahoe to the Chief Joseph Rally in John Day Oregon via stops in Reno NV and Eagle ID to see friends and family, so I’ll be spending Saturday night in Reno.

It’s possible that I might try to make an Iron Butt Saddlesore 1000 ride out of my ride home from John Day after the rally. There are a lot of “ifs” and “whethers” clouding that idea, though.

As I’ve posted before, I lived in Plumas County from 1980 through 2001 and the majority of that time I lived in in E. Quincy on Fairground Road about 200′ from the main gate of the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds. Consequently, I’m familiar with the area so here is some information for those of you who will be camping at the 49er rally:

There’s a gas station / convenience store / car wash (pressure washers) on the corner of Fairground Road and Hwy 70. It’s a quarter-mile (5 minute) walk from the fairgrounds and it’s a good place to buy beverages, snacks, ice, and to hose off the bike if you muck it up. FWIW, I met Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters there in 1989 when they filmed some scenes for Pink Cadillac at that location.

Anyway, within walking distance of the fairgrounds (less than a mile) there are 2 grocery stores, Chinese, fish & chips, and Mexican restaurants a donut shop, a bar, and 2 auto parts stores (NAPA & O’Reilly). Downtown Quincy is less than 2 miles west on Hwy 70 and there’s a whole lot more to be found there including my favorite breakfast spot EVER: Morning Thunder.

The bottom line is you can leave your freeze-dried food at home if you’d like because there’s plenty of fresh food available close to camp. Instead of camp food I’ll be packing a frying pan and pot that works on my Jetboil. To keep stuff cool in camp I’ll pick up a disposable foam cooler and ice.

                                    And there you have it!

I made my reservation last night for June 9-11. When I did there were significantly less then 400 motorcycle reservations left in that time frame and the June 10-12 reservations won’t be available until June 6.

THIS IS IMPORTANT, PEOPLE: If you’re going on the 7-Passes ride you need to make your reservations, and you should do it sooner than later. And as Erasmo wrote, it doesn’t matter what kind of pass you have. You still need a reservation.

Oof! I’ve been following the weather forecast for Prescott since last Monday. Back then they were calling for a 2% chance of rain showers on Monday from 10am-2PM. That percentage has steadily increased and now they’re saying 50% chance of rain and snow starting Monday night and lasting into Tuesday. I’ll add that “they’re” is the NOAA/National Weather Service.

I’m still going, and I’ll still be camping on Saturday and Sunday nights, but I’ll be packing up and moving to the Best Western Prescottonian for Monday night because I damn sure don’t want to break camp in the rain or snow.
