Well it’s suddenly kind of unlikely that I’ll be able to go on this ride. I had a ladder collapse under me at work and I now have 3 broken (not cracked, broken) ribs on my left side and I can’t do anything without acute pain. The landing also drove the temple of my glasses all the way through my left eyebrow from end-to-end, but that barely hurts.
I’m home and I’ll do what I can to facilitate the healing process, but the doctor had a good laugh when I hoped out loud that I’d be healed enough to ride in 9 days.
We’ll see. I’ll go if I can.

Being as Orega Hwy will be closed today we will basically be doing the original route backwards meaning we will head to Fallbrook via the coast. After lunch we will gas up in Fallbrook and head home via De Luz. The GPS route ends at Clinton Keith rd and I-15 where everyone can head home via their route of choice. I will be heading back to the OC via I-15 to the 91 to the 55.

Cardo has offered mesh for years. In fact, Cardo pioneered mesh in helmet communication and Sena was the late-comer. But Cardo doesn’t offer OPEN mesh meaning you still have to go through a pairing process with the riders you want to yak with.
But not Sena. You can turn on and talk to anyone who is on the same mesh channel — no pairing required.
Just in time for Tech Day! I got my torque wrenches back from calibration.

My photos from the Death Valley ride can be found in the club Google Drive, but they also can be found here which I think is a much more elegant format:

If you want to join into the group chatter on SCBMWRC rides you’ll want to stick with Sena. There are other reasons why I prefer Sena too, and I currently have helmets with current versions of Sena and Cardo installed. I’ll add that I was strictly a Cardo Packtalk Bold user when I bought my BMW and started riding with SCBMWRC and I wasn’t real happy about having to switch at the time, but now I only use the Cardo-equipped helmet when I’m riding with friends riding other brands of bikes and using Cardo communicators, and that’s pretty rare.
The primary reason I prefer Sena is they offer Open Mesh and Cardo doesn’t. With the Open Mesh protocol there’s no pairing involved. You turn on your communicator, activate mesh, select one of 9 channels (SCBMWRC always use channel 1 which is default when you turn the unit on) and ~Voila~, you’re connected to everyone else on that channel. With Cardo units it’s necessary to pair all the units in a group and that can be problematic, especially when you show up right at KSU and everyone is ready to pull out.
I even keep open mesh turned on when I’m riding solo because I can (and often do) exchange greetings and road & traffic information with riders going the opposite direction. Among other things, I think that has saved me from a few speeding tickets. Anyway, that’s not something you can do with a Cardo unit.
Sena’s will also operate in paired mesh mode if privacy is an issue.
Duty calls! Time to go to work.
March 19, 2023 at 3:10 pm in reply to: April 1st General Meeting, Ride Planning Meeting, Day Ride #19243After the General Meeting we will be riding to lunch at Firehouse Que & Brew in Fallbrook. Our route there will take us over the Ortega Hwy to Grand Ave., then east to Clinton Keith Rd., and then south through the hills for a scenic ride to Fallbrook via Deluz.
Firehouse Que & Brew features a delicious menu of slow-smoked treats including ribs, brisket, tri tip and chicken (plates & sandwiches) and for dessert they have peach cobbler and bread pudding that you really should save a little room in your stomach for. I have reserved tables in their large, covered, heated, outdoor dining area.
After lunch, the ride I’ll be leading will continue to Oceanside via some picturesque back roads and back to the OC via I-5. Those of you who live in Riverside or North Orange Counties can also head home via I-15 or even back over Ortega Hwy if you’d like.
- KSU will be 10:30 AM from Irv Seaver’s.
- There will be a brief bathroom stop at the Firefighter Memorial on Ortega Hwy.
- Arrival at Firehouse Que & Brew will be aprox. 1:30 PM.
- Distance from Irv Seaver’s to Firehouse Que & Brew is 96 miles.
- There will be a gas stop in Fallbrook right after lunch (Shell or Arco).
The Firehouse Que & Brew menu can be found here:

I thought I’d kick this up to the top of the Recent Replies list one more time. This airshow is this coming weekend and I’m going whether anyone joins me or not. But it would be a lot more fun with some other South Coasters riding with me.
Just a reminder: This airshow will only be the third time in history that the USAF Thunderbirds and the USN Blue Angels will perform in the same airshow, so if shock-n-awe aerial performances by two of the worlds premier jet demonstration teams appeals to you, then Point Mugu is where you want to be next weekend.
Oh, and the airshow and parking are free!
So if you’re interested n riding up there with me, post something in this thread and we’ll figure out where we’ll meet up and when.
Pete

And Sat is sit around the campfire, get drunk and tell lies?
I can’t speak for any of the other riders, but I’ll be sight-seeing and taking photos on Saturday. Our ride leader wrote: “There will be many great Saturday day-ride options such as Dante’s View, the town of Darwin and the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns” and that suggests choice which I think is a refreshing departure from the club norm of having every mile of a trip pre-planned.That said, I’m looking forward to revisiting the forgotten art of spontaneous decision and doing some paper-map navigation again. And now it’s time to stop typing and focus on getting to Flo’s in time to have breakfast before KSU.Ok, here are a couple GPX files for the ride there and back. On the way there I have us stopping in Yermo and Shoshone for gas, that based on how far Dave feels his airhead will go on a tank. I also have us stopping for lunch at the Crowbar Cafe & Saloon which is directly across the road from the Shoshone Chevron. If we leave Flo’s at 8:30 and don’t encounter any problems, we should arrive at the Crowbar around 1:00. From there it’s about 75 miles to Furnace Creek via the Badwater Basin.
And for the Friday route to work it will be important to arrive at Flo’s with a full tank. You’ve been warned!
The ride home is via Stovepipe Wells, Trona, Kramer Junction, and home. The GPX routes us back to Flo’s because it’s basically the original Friday route inverted.

Well, it’s looking real likely that we’ll be riding in some rain on Friday, but it shouldn’t be heavy and we should be out from under it by the time we hit Victorville. No rain in the forecast for Death Valley and the nighttime temps should be in the 50s and daytime temps should be in the 70s.
The attached rain forecast is for Chino Airport and the chance and quantity of rain gets progressively less from there to Victorville.
At least that’s how it looks right now, but as we all should know, the weather doesn’t answer to the weatherman.

I hate to throw decisions into the mix, but they also have bread pudding on the menu and it’s delicious too.- This reply was modified 1 year ago by Pete Rissman.
March 5, 2023 at 7:08 am in reply to: General Meeting and Past Presidents Breakfast March 4th #19056I took a little detour to the Firehouse Que & Brew in Fallbrook on my way home from the GM & PPB to make sure the peach cobbler is still up to my lofty standards. IT IS!
Oy, the things I do for you members! 😉
BTW, The Firehouse Que & Brew has a covered & heated outdoor seating area and we will have exclusive use of as many of the tables as we need for the after-meeting ride on April 1st.

A little more info:
- Point Mugu is an easy day ride.
- The airshow and parking are free.
- There’s lots more going on besides the jet teams.
I’ve been studying the weather for the last week and the Saturday rain probability for the Southern Nevada and Western Arizona region has gotten a little worse every day. As of this morning it’s at 70% and it’s also going to be cold and windy.
So I don’t need to wait anymore: I’m going to take a pass on this ride.
Pete
If rain was the only issue I wouldn’t be giving it another thought. But the wind and temperature forecasts along with the possibility of snow down to 1500’ elevation are giving me pause.
The last time I rode a motorcycle in a snowstorm was on Ortega Hwy on my Triumph, and it scared the hell out of me — not so much my own ability to keep my bike going where I wanted it to, but the way the cars in oncoming traffic were sliding around. A couple came way over the center line, but it happened far enough in front of me that they could get back on their own side of the road before we passed each other.
But I’ll wait until Wednesday to make the final decision.
