I’m now officially pre-paid and registered for the 49er rally.
I’ll be leaving the OC early enough on Thursday morning (May 26) to get through LA before the commute traffic builds and I’ll be riding straight to Quincy in “get there” mode. Of course I’ll be stopping for gas, a fast-food lunch, and to shake some circulation back into my legs if needed, but that’s about it. I used to live in Quincy and had family here in the OC, so I’ve done this drive in a car a few times and it’s taken 8-9 hours. So barring complications, I anticipate arriving at the fairgrounds before 4pm.
Let me know if anyone has similar travel plans and would like to ride together.
I can only ride on Saturday this weekend. Where will the group be meeting on Saturday morning and what time is KSU?
For what it’s worth, After being told “NO day passes” by a couple of gyms in Prescott, I contacted the Prescott YMCA and spoke with a delightful gal at the front desk named Teri who told me that they welcome non-members (and especially BMW riders). A $15 fee and a signed waver will get you full access to the facility for a day. That not only includes hot showers, but pool privileges and a host of other amenities.
The physical address is:

Signed up, which means I’ll be absent at the SCBMWRC General Meeting.
Cancel my last, I WILL be at the Sendero Starbucks about 0800 and leave at 0815 to make Black Bear by 0915. Anyone care to join me ??
Barring flood, fire, earthquake, or close-proximity nuclear explosion, I’ll be there too.
So is there any planned meet-up and ride TO the breakfast and meeting?
Nope. Or as they say in Berlin, Nein
Chino Airport is reporting 33mph wind with 51mph gusts over the last hour. Here in Costa Mesa I have 3 unidentified trash cans in my yard this morning and there’s a large tree branch partially blocking the street out front.
Not my idea of good riding conditions, so I’m going to take a pass on this one.
I looked at the wind forecast at a bunch of locations along the published route and the highest forecasts I saw were 20-25MPH winds with 39-42mph gusts; mostly along SR-62 through Morongo and Yucca Valleys and the N side of Joshua Tree NP. The forecasts were 8-10mph lower down on I-10 and 60. Peak winds are from 11am-1pm and the winds will be out of the North.
The info was from the Dark Sky app on my iPhone and the NOAA/NWS website; both of which have been pretty accurate when I’ve used them.
And I agree with John: Riding an RT through crosswinds like that doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve done it before and only thought it was fun for a mile or 2.
FYI, the westbound 91 Freeway will be closed all weekend from McKinley to Main and those streets bracket the I-15 interchange. The reports I’ve read say there will also be lanes closed on the eastbound side, but it won’t be completely closed. I don’t know if or how that will affect the ride because I haven’t seen any kind of route yet, but we need to plan accordingly.
Those are some great photos, Pete! Thanks. With your okay, and with the consent of each individual, would like to put some in the next Newsletter?
It’s fine by me, John. Those are the club’s photos, not mine.
The Christmas Party photos I took can now be found here:

Sorry it took so long to post them.
I’m the Maintenance Manager for a contract pharmaceutical manufacturing company and December is maintenance-shutdown month. Basically, that means we shut down production and try to do 12 months worth of maintenance and upgrades in 3-4 weeks.
The bottom line is I haven’t had the free time to process and post the photos I took at the Christmas party, but I hope to have that done by New Years Day.
FWIW, Iâll also be bringing my ârealâ camera and a couple remote strobes to do some individual and group portraits, so you may want to adjust your wardrobe considerations accordingly.
Or not: The camera doesnât care. 😏
I’ll be bringing blueberry muffins.
Heads up:
According to Google Maps, Old Ranch Parkway from Seal Beach Blvd to the westbound 22 onramp is closed until Dec 15th. It looks like the path of least resistance is to exit the Spaghettini parking lot eastbound on Old Ranch Parkway, cross over Seal Beach Blvd at the traffic light. and use the corkscrew onramp to westbound 22. That appears to still be open.
See you tomorrow.
The last two times I went up Latigo Canyon Rd there were far too many bicyclists on it for it to be enjoyable (and I wasn’t trying to aggressively ride it). There were several pelotons on the inclines that weren’t letting traffic past.
According to their website, the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum is only open from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday and is closed Monday-Friday. So it looks like a stop there on Friday is out of the question.
Packed and ready to go. I plan to get to Flo’s around 7:30 and have breakfast. I haven’t eaten there since the 2019 Planes of Fame Airshow.
Has our Friday morning meet up point been established yet? Last I recall it was only narrowed down to somewhere in the Chino Hills area.
How about Corkyâs Kitchen & Bakery just off the 71 on Rancho Valley Drive in Pomona? Lots of good baked stuff and traditional breakfast fare. They also know how to make coffee.
So itâs snowing where weâre going (Bishop and parts of the Sat route). Not to worry, though, because it shouldnât be much more than a dusting and the chance of precipitation drops to <10% tomorrow and 0% Wednesday through next week. In other words, the roads should all be clear and thereâs no precip forecast for the duration of our ride.
It will be cold, though. Daytime temps in Bishop will be in the 50s and 60s with nighttime temps in the mid-30s. The coldest temps we should see during our Saturday ride will be in the low 40s and that will only be prior to 10am. After that, 50s and 60s.
To be a Pete whoâs frank, that will be a welcome departure from riding in the 90°+ temperatures weâve been riding in.
That said, Iâd like to remind everyone that Mother Nature doesnât answer to the weather man. 😉
