Borrego Springs Camping/Hotel/RV Weekend, Friday, March 19th to Sunday, March 21st.
We’ve planned a weekend trip to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park area, The club has reserved three campsites at Vellecito County Park and Stagecoach Station. There are hotels and RV camping nearby and at Vellecito. Sign up on the ride list now!
A club ride is planned for Friday and Saturday. Campers, bring your own chow as there are no restaurants at the campsite. Bill Allen’s World Famous Margarita Bar will be available Friday night. It would be great if a few of the attendees would bring snacks (chips, salsa, and finger food).
      Group Rides
Friday: We’ll meet at the Starbucks, corner of Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway. Route and time TBD.
Saturday: We’ll ride from the campground, over Sweeney Pass, to Desert View Tower, then on to Campo for lunch and a tour of the railroad museum. Our trip home will take us past Mt Laguna and Julian on our way home. Or something like that.
      Sunday: Ride home is TBD.
      Camping
Depending on the number of campers, it should be about $15 for the weekend. What!!?? Yes, that’s right. This will cover the campsite and firewood each night. Please bring cash in the exact amount for your stay.
Hotel and RVing. Reservations are on your own.
Vellicito County Park. There are no hookups but there are designated RV sites at the campground.
Kokopelli’s Hideaway is located about 17 miles away and has cottages for rent.
Stagecoach Trails is 14 miles away. They have cabins for rent as well as RV hookups.

Lorna and I are interested in attending but need to find a hotel/motel/cabin somewhere. The cabins at Stagecoach Trails are closed, and Kokopelli’s Hideaway is booked up that weekend. So we’re a maybe at this point unless we can find something fairly close to the campground.

Seeing as no one else is hoteling, and the nearest available hotel is almost an hour away from the campsite, we won’t be attending this one unfortunately.

This response is from the Anza-Borrego State Park website:

Are the flowers blooming in Borrego?
It will be a good year; there will be spring flowers this year in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Borrego Springs.

Claret Cup Cactus, Firecracker Ocotillo – just starting to bloom.
                                      Desert Marigold, Apricot Mallow
                                      Canterberry Bells, Beavertail
                                      Fairy Duster, Indian Mallow

Like to know if we have a 2nd pickup point (time?) at Lake Elsinore Market as before, if any ride plan in GPX available for the trip.

Thanks, weather look good for the 3/19 weekend!

Hi Everyone, here are the gpx files. I’m happy to have someone review them.
Once again, we’re staying at Vellecito County Park. I have three sites reserved but will release one if no one else signs up. That will put your costs at $25 for the weekend; includes camping and firewood. Please try to bring exact change.
We’ll meet at the Starbucks in Sendero Marketplace, corner of Antonio Parkway and Orgeta Highway. KSU at 9:00.
Friday ride will take us over Ortega, down DeLuz, then out to Palomar Mountain. From there we’ll head to Julian for lunch and pie, before finishing at the campground. Total of 175 miles and 5.5 hours.
On Saturday, we’ll make a 200 mile loop. We start back toward Julian, then southwest on Old Julian Highway, connecting to Wildcat Canyon Road, skirting El Cajon. Next, we go southeast stopping in Campo where we will check out the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum ($8 adults, $6 for 62+) and have lunch. Finally, a stop at the Desert View Tower, before returning to camp. 200 miles, 6+ hours.
                                              Sunday is TBD.

Hi Ed, I’m so happy that you will be joining us!
There are currently six signed up on the ride list, including John Crittenden. Are you saying that there are another three that want to go; three more that are not signed up on the ride list? If so, that will make nine. I have three sites reserved and we can fit nine on those three sites so you do not need to reserve sites on your own. PLEASE add your names to the ride list!
Yes, there is a second meeting point on Friday morning at the store at the Lake Elsinor end of Ortega Hwy.

I’ve had a couple of good questions about where/how/when we will be eating. A: bring your own food for the campground. We’ll stop for lunch on Friday and Saturday but you’ll need granola or oatmeal for breakfast and an REI or Big 5 dehydrated meal for dinner. Also, bring some salties and finger food to share during Bill’s World Famous Margarita Bar on Friday night.

We will head from Palomar to Borrego for gas and lunch. Next we’ll spend some time routing through Galleta Meadows. I’m attaching the updated gpx file and a few photos from GM.
